Permission to Write Masterclasses

We’re bringing you 2-hour intensives in areas of writing to help you with your goals. We want to provide affordable resources to continue cultivating the voices of writers of color. We look forward to working with you! Replays will be available for those who cannot make the live sessions. Discount provided for members of the Permission Granted membership community.

Course Overview

This course is designed for aspiring novelists who want to learn how to effectively outline their novel. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities, participants will develop a comprehensive outline that serves as a roadmap for their writing journey.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Understand the fundamental elements of a novel.

2. Develop compelling characters and settings.

3. Create a cohesive plot structure.

4. Outline their novel, including major scenes and turning points.

 

Meet your instructor!

Ashley M. Coleman is a published novelist and accomplished writer whose work spans fiction and cultural journalism. Her debut novel "Good Morning, Love" was published by Simon & Schuster in 2022, garnering attention from notable outlets including Katie Couric Media, Bustle's "Most Anticipated Books of June 2022," and Joy the Baker. She recently expanded her fiction portfolio with a romantic short story published by Heartbreak on Substack.

A seasoned writing instructor, Ashley has led fiction workshops at the University of Pennsylvania and lectured at Temple University's Journalism program. Her expertise has been recognized through fellowships with Torch Literary Arts and Anaphora Arts, and she continues to nurture emerging writers through Permission to Write. Her work appears in prestigious outlets including GRAMMY.com, The Cut, and Essence.com, demonstrating her versatility across different writing forms.

Drawing from her experience in traditional publishing, digital media, and education, Ashley combines industry insight with practical techniques to help writers develop strong narrative foundations. Her teaching methodology emphasizes both creative development and professional growth, making her an ideal mentor for aspiring novelists.
